Urgent Petition: Protect the Elmina-Java Museum—Our Heritage Cannot Be Paved Over
We, the undersigned, make this heartfelt appeal to safeguard the Elmina-Java Museum and its surrounding heritage site from the devastating consequences of the proposed road-widening project along the Trans Africa Highway.
To: Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts
Ministry of Roads and Highways
Why this matters
The Elmina-Java Museum, officially opened in February 2003, is not just a building—it is a living archive of our shared history. As Ghana’s oldest privately-owned non-profit museum, it stands as a beacon of cultural memory, connecting Ghana, the Netherlands, and Indonesia through centuries of intertwined heritage. Located at Nippon Junction, Elmina, this museum embodies the soul of Elmina—a historic center for the African Diaspora and the Global African Community, tracing its roots back to the 14th century.
““A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.””
What’s at risk
To disturb this sacred space is to erase irreplaceable stories. Every artifact, every wall, every corner of this museum whispers the resilience and identity of generations. If this site is compromised, the damage will be permanent—our children and grandchildren will inherit silence where history once spoke.
Economic impact
Beyond its cultural significance, the museum sustains livelihoods. It draws visitors from across the world, fueling local businesses and strengthening the economy. Destroying or diminishing this landmark will not only rob us of our heritage but also strip the community of vital economic opportunities.
““Our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our nation.””
We urge the authorities to act responsibly and honorably
• Design the road project to protect the museum and its surroundings.
• Commission an independent impact assessment to ensure cultural preservation.
• Engage in public consultations, giving voice to the community whose heritage is at stake.
““A concerted effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to our cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational and economic legacies—all of the things that quite literally make us who we are.””
A better path forward
Development and heritage can coexist. Let us choose a path that celebrates progress without sacrificing the essence of who we are. The Elmina-Java Museum is more than a structure—it is a testament to our history, a bridge to our future, and a symbol of unity for generations to come.
Call to action
We appeal to you: Do not let our heritage be buried under asphalt.
Protect it. Preserve it. Honor it.
Humbly submitted
