August 29, 1969: Progress Party wins elections to form government of the 2nd Republic

On August 29, 1969 the Progress Party (PP) led by Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia won 105 out of 140 seats in the first National Assembly of the 2nd Rebublic of Ghana. The Progress Party won 59% of the vote, defeating the National Alliance of Liberals (29 seats) led by Komla Gbedemah, former finance minister in Nkrumah’s government.
